Additionally, filing your ITR allows you to claim tax refunds if you have paid more taxes than necessary. The filing of an ITR for the fiscal year 2023-24 and assessment year 2024-25 has begun, with July 31, 2024 (Wednesday) as the deadline. With the filing process becoming more streamlined and digitised, it is important to know how to register yourself online on the e-filing portal. The procedure for filing an ITR has been modernised and simplified, as the Income Tax Department has launched an online portal for individuals to submit their forms. Taxpayers in India can submit their income tax returns either online or offline. However, understanding and choosing between these options can be confusing, as each method offers unique benefits and considerations. To file your income tax return online, first-time taxpayers must complete the online registration process. Registering on the e-Filing site is necessary for using the full range of services available on the portal. This initial step enables individuals to access various tax-related services efficiently. Aadhaar card PAN card Valid mobile number Valid email ID Visit the e-filing portal: Go to the Income Tax Department's e-filing portal homepage. Enter basic details: Enter all the mandatory details like PAN, name, date of birth (DOB), membership number, and enrollment date on the Basic Details page. Click Continue. PAN authentication: If your PAN is not registered on the e-Filing Portal, an error message will be displayed. Enter personal information: Enter all required information, including your name, DOB, gender (if applicable), and residential status as indicated by your PAN. Click Continue. Contact details: Individual taxpayers will see the Contact Details page once their PAN has been authenticated. Enter your primary mobile number, email ID, and address. Click Continue. OTP verification: Two separate 6-digit OTPs will be sent to the primary mobile number and email ID mentioned. Enter the OTPs and click Continue. OTP validity: Note that the OTPs are valid for 15 minutes only. You have three attempts to enter the correct OTP. Set password: On the Set Password page, enter your chosen password in both the Set Password and Confirm Password text boxes. Set a personalised message for the password and then click Register. Registration completion: Once successfully registered, click Proceed to Login to begin the login process. Once you log in to the e-Filing portal, update your profile information to unlock access to all the available services. After updating your profile, you can file your tax returns and use other tax-related services provided on the platform. Filing your ITR on time and accurately is essential. Not only does it comply with legal requirements, but it also ensures you can claim refunds and maintain a clear financial record. Following these steps will help you navigate the e-filing process with ease.
