Jio’s prepaid plans 20% more affordable than Airtel, Vodafone Idea’s despite latest tariff hikes

Over the last two days, the telcos announced tariff hikes to boost revenues and increase the average revenue per user (ARPU), while Jio and Airtel also want to focus on monetising 5G, having already invested over Rs 2 lakh crore in rolling out the latest generation of networks, as per industry experts.

REUTERS/Anushree Fadnavis/File Photo NEW DELHI: Reliance Jio ’s popular prepaid plans are as much as 20% more affordable than the similar prepaid plans offered by its competitors Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi), an analysis of the post-tariff hike prices shows. As per the latest prices, Jio’s Rs 249 plan with 1GB/day, unlimited voice and SMS is priced Rs 50 less – or 20% lower – than Airtel and Vi’s comparable Rs 299 plan. Advt Likewise, the Jio Rs 299 plan with 2GB/day, unlimited voice and SMS, is priced Rs 50 less – or 17% lower – than Airtel and Vi’s Rs 349 plan. On the higher end, the Jio Rs 3,599 plan offers 2.5GB/day compared to 2GB/day offered on Airtel and Vi’s Rs 3,599 plan – representing 20% more data. Likewise, in the postpaid segment , Jio’s plans appear more value proposition-oriented. The market leader’s Rs 349 postpaid plan (30GB) is affordable by Rs 100 – or 29% – compared to Airtel and Vi’s Rs 449 plan. Meanwhile, Jio's Rs 449 postpaid plan (75GB) is affordable by Rs 100 – or 22% – compared to Airtel and Vi’s Rs 549 plan. For entry-level, or 2G users, the lowest 28-day prepaid plan from the rival telcos is at Rs 199, while JioPhone/JioBharat users can get plans from as low as Rs 91 with 28-day validity, the latest listing shows. Jio and Airtel have been offering free 5G services in a bid to lure customers towards the latest technology. On the other hand, Vi has outlined an aggressive capex plan to expand 4G and roll out 5G. Advt However, after the latest price rate increases, the unlimited 5G benefit is only available on Jio and Airtel plans with 2GB/day and above. Vi is yet to launch commercial 5G services. Jio’s rates are up by 12-15%, while Airtel and Vi increased mobile tariffs by 11-20% and 10-23%, respectively. This is the first wide-ranging headline price increase since November 2021.
