DMK to hold protests in Tamil Nadu courts against three new criminal laws

Listen to Story Tamil Nadu's ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has vowed to hold protests in courts across the state against the three newly-enacted criminal laws by the Centre, sources said on Monday. The legal wing of the party led by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin will hold the protests in courts across the state. The decision to hold state-wide demonstrations against the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyamwas (BSA) was taken in a meeting held on Monday, where a resolution was passed to conduct protest on July 5. The DMK's legal wing will also be holding a hunger strike against the three laws on July 6, near the Rajarathna Stadium in Chennai. The party is also planning to hold discussions on the new criminal laws and has requested ordinary citizens and lawyers from across all political parties to participate in them. Earlier on Monday, the Opposition mounted a blistering attack on the government as the new criminal laws came into force, accusing it of forcibly passing the legislation by suspending MPs and claiming that major parts of the laws are a "cut, copy and paste job". The three laws- BNS, BNSS and BSA- came into effect across the country on Monday. These laws will replace the colonial-era Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Evidence Act, respectively.
